Supporting new waste service pilot in East London

Back to work

Like all local authorities, the London Borough of Redbridge are constantly looking at how waste services can be improved to deliver efficiencies. From this commitment emerged the idea of providing residents a wheelie bin for all non-recyclable waste. Previously all waste was collected from the kerbside in loose sacks which whilst low cost, caused issues with bags blowing away and ripped open by foxes and rodents. The Council committed to a pilot service with bins provided to 6,000 homes and turned to Mobius to support this through provision of a range of communication initiatives.

Services provided:

  • Communications strategy
  • Graphic design and artwork
  • Photography
  • Social Media content creation
  • Production, print and mailing

“The communications helped to achieve a 13% reduction in residual waste and a 3.5% increase in recycling across the pilot area giving us the confidence to commit to a borough-wide roll out”.

We devised a plan that built awareness of the pilot service over a five week period starting with a simple letter sent to households, an overview leaflet sent a week before the new bins arrived and a more expansive instructional information pack delivered alongside the bins. These were accompanied by supportive communications including bin stickers and contravention stickers.

Materials contained information and motivational messages prompting increased diligence with recycling.
