Campaign tackling environmental crime

Back to work

Like many inner city regions, Newham suffers from excessive environmental crime; illegal dumping, cigarette butts, discarded chewing gum and littering. As part of a renewed commitment to address this, which included additional Enforcement Officers, Newham appointed Mobius to develop an extensive campaign with the aim of highlighting impact and consequence of the actions targeted.

We adopted a disruptive tone to the campaign, highlighting the disgusting and disrespectful nature of dumping waste and littering, the stupidity of discarding cigarette butts and gum, highlighting the threat of financial penalty for those caught – and the increased likelihood of getting caught.

The campaign ran over 18 months utilising OOH media, mobile billboards and paid-for social media.

Part of the campaign included the construction of a waste cage; used as part of a series of public engagement events. The concept was to demonstrate the amount of waste that gets dumped on Newham’s streets each day.

Built as a modular unit, the device was able to be used in a variety of locations including those where space was limited.
